Shri Ragam - beautiful weave of music and story
.................. By Dhvani
>>>Dhvani has mailed us her experience at the event. The views are hers and not of chennaiDecemberSeason.com>>>
After reading a unique trailer about Shri Ragam in Hindu newspaper and the curtain raiser on KutcheriBuzz, I got very curious and set out to Krishna Gana Sabha to check out what this was all about on December 19th.
The well lit stage had Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh on center stage, with M.D. Pallavi and Abhishek Raghuram on either side of her. The percussionists Pramath Kiran (Tabla and Morsing) and Anand Ananthakrishnan (mridangam) flanked the stage.
While the audience was getting settled, I got to hear bits and pieces of conversation around me – everyone trying to figure out what was in store for the evening!
And after the invocation piece, Jayanthi, along with her group, wove a beautiful story about Lalithamma and Adithya – a guru and her student. Set to present-day tone, the story neatly walked us through the perspective – of an eager student who wished to learn music from the best, of a guru and her expectations from a student, of a musician and her experience and thoughts through decades, and then of course, of music in its various forms.
Shri Ragam was well balanced with narration, conversation, Carnatic music – both vocal and veena and Hindustani music. The singers did a fabulous job throughout - the swara devatha slokams, devarnama, alaaps, neravals and they were ably supported by the percussionists. Jayanthi’s taanam and later “Annapoorne” in Saama on the veena were excellent.
The script/narration/screenplay was clear with many an analogy for clarity. Quite a few topics were covered during this two hour programme and the messages were delivered in small doses along the way – just enough to get one thinking but still staying with the narrator. There were tons of adjectives used to describe music and very few word repeats.
Jayanthi’s ability to switch energy levels in her voice while she described a scene, assumed the role of a young and exuberant Adithya, or altered to the wise Lalithamma was just amazing. Alternating the script between English and Tamil made for a good change too.
Shri Ragam completely captivated the attention of the audience with description of places, people and their emotions but specifically the locations Madurai & Varanasi stay in my mind. One could almost hear the temple bells and the sounds of river Ganges who flows through wild rapids and shallow pebbled routes. Pallavi also captured these sounds beautifully with her rendition of “tunga tarange Gange”.
The simple way in which Jayanthi explained how layers of complexity can be added to a ragam, in this case Kalyani, showed a brief glimpse of how the syllabus is set out for Carnatic music. Humor was interspersed with the dialogs making it funny yet thought provoking.
Jayanthi has taken the art of storytelling through and about music to the next level with Shri Ragam.

Madurai TNS : A phenomenon
by...Sivapriya Krishnan
For me the season started with Madurai T N Seshagopalan at the Kartik Fine Arts. TNS was in good cheer and the two brilliant pieces vying with one another were the Nagaswaravali and Vijayasaraswati alapana. The brisk swaras at Saranam Vijaya Saraswati Maye, was a testimony to the veterans genius, which has been proved amply several times. Accompanied by M Chandrasekharan on the violin and Ramabhadran on the mridangam, this concert was a memorable one.
I doubled it up with the masters' Music Academy concert, as its a yearly ritual for me, never to be missed.
My pick was the Bhairavi raga and the Vachaspati swaras for Kanathandri naapai in the song Ennaduni, a Patnam delight. The Bhairavi raga could not have hid itself anymore, as every nook and phrase of the raga was explored by him, only to be followed by the beautiful Upacharamulanu.
Here again he was supported well Delhi Sunderrajan on the violin , Ramabhadran on the mridangam and Grurprasad on the ghatam.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Seshu-Seenu read the title of the evening programme at Krishna Gana Sabha. Multiple delight! TNS and Mandolin Srinivas together with Guruvayur Dorai and Zakir Husain as percussion accompaniment.
Though personally I felt that the title name was a little frivolous and that some other name surely could have been coined, I had to thank myself for attending this concert.
What a fiercely fiesty combination that was ! All titans ! with prodigious leaps and powerful steps! Left one spellbound and stupefied !
Starting with an Abhogi varnam, the songs that followed were, Hamsadhwani ragam and Vatapi Ganapathim with swaras.
A uniquely off beat kalapramana was chosen by TNS for the Anandabhairavi Marivere, which lent a nice pep to the otherwise peppy gait of Misra Chapu !
Samajavaragamana in Hindolam witnessed a short but imaginative neraval from TNS, followed by swara exchanges by both Srinivas and him at the line Veda Shiro ....!This was then followed by a very expansive raga alapana of Kalyani,by TNS,wherein he left no raga exploration untouched; with brief exchanges between him and Srinivas at a few places and at Tanam, before they moved onto a pallavi in Adi Tala sama eduppu : "Hare! Rama Krishna Govinda, Mukunda" . One may wonder that it is far too simple for the artists on stage. But then TNS put his imaginative, genius stamp onto this by doing various tala workmanship for this phrase, thus embellishing it fully !
The way he made a korvai with the word Govinda was impeccable.
Mandolin Srinivas, proved that he was an intelligent master, all along, wonderfully giving the due respect to the larger titan by his side, at the same time displaying his mastery over the instrument. There were times when he just played along side, or made a nice frill of an embellishment or even kept quiet without playing or disturbing the flow of music.
The Tani saw sparkling fireworks between the mridangam and tabla ustads. Words may not describe anymore of this experience.

Pantula Rama : Fascile and confident
by Sivapriya Krishnan
Been a while since I posted on the site.
Pantula Rama at the Music Academy made a statement , by a fascile approach to her singing. If the Sanskrit word "anaayaasam" needs to be understood in application, then one has to listen to her sing. Her voice traverses multi octaves with ease and her brighas are crisp and fall in place. Her creativity, energy and exploratory approach on stage very easily reminds us of the felicity of MLV. I am not here talking about bani or style. Readers please don't confuse. Just drawing a mild comparison to the energy on stage !
I heard her only from the song Vinanaasakoni yunnaanura in Pratapavarali.
Parvati Ninnune in Kalkagada, which she sang with a tisra nadai approach had a folkish touch , which was rather different to the ears.
She sang an excellent Kamboji raga , that was to be followed by Tiruvadi Charanam.
My crib with her Tiruvadi Charanam was that it became a " Candy Floss ". A song with so much pathos and entreaty was not treated to its grandeur. She was very fast with the song and the swaras sans neraval only added to this lightness.
Her RTP in Khanda triputa, purvangam Tisra nadai till arudi and the dhrutam portion with chatusram was an intelligent line. It was actually a simple format, very easy to handle, but at the same time giving the listener a feeling of being tricky !
She treated this pallavi well and wrapped with a brisk Sindubhairavi Tillana of Lalgudi Jayaraman.
What is good about her, is that she sings pleasantly, unmindful of the surroundings, with ease and poise,is very confident about herself and presents with maturity.
MSN Murthy on the violin, VV Ramanamurthy on the mridangam and N Somayajulu on the ghatam matched the artist's calibre and added to the lustre of the concert.

Indian Fine Arts Society inaugurates its season
For the classically inclined, the nomination of vidwan Manakkal Rangarajan's name for the award Sangeetha Kala Shikhamani at The Indian Fine Arts Society will bring back the grand old days of the vidwan's concerts while many stalwarts were on the concert circuits.
Manakkal Rangarajan too expressed satisfaction that he sang with equal passion and dedication and was also a sought after vidwan at the times when Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, G.N. Balasubramaniam, Semmangudi and many of that era were ruling. The late arrival of awards dis not dampen his spirits. His advises for the young performers included dedication for what they do and not to sing looking at written down words from papers.

The felicitations by senior artists T.N.Krishnan, T.V. Gopalakrishnan, T.K. Govinda Rao, T.R. Subramaniam and S.A.K. Durga gave a good account of what respect Rangarajan had with his fellow musicians of his times.
T.N. Krishnan is generous in applauding his counterparts as well as the young artistes. His mention in his speech as chitraveena maestro Ravikiran and modern musician T.M. Krishna brought smiles on the faces of the listeners, as being referred to by a musician of his calibre is wonderful for the youngsters.
Ravikiran was quick to give a solution to bring in the youngsters to the award evenings. "It must be made compulsory for the junior, sub-senior artistes to attend the award event. They should know more about the stalwarts," he said.
A London based rasika is making a documentary on Manakkal Rangarajan and this reminded Krishna to mention that more documentaries be made for the younger generations to get inspired.
A group of students from Hyderabad, trained by Manjula Ramaswamy performed a short piece with candles in their hands and standing on a globe-like structure. Every movement gave them huge applause.
Following this, a Bharathanatyam performance by R. Sai Santosh, disciple of guru Adyar K. Lakshman and Deepa Baba Prasad. Guru Lakshman announced that the first item was a new jatiswaram in Kharaharapriya he composed and choreographed for which music was composed by Mysore V Seshanna.

Institution of awards at the opening of Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha festival
Awards go on mounting and await recipients every year at the sabhas during the December season.
This year Nithyasree Mahadevan has reasons to make awards in the names of her legendary paternal grandmother D.K. Pattammal and maternal grandfather Palghat Mani Iyer since his centenary is to be celebrated next year.
At the launch of the music festival at Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha Nithyasree received the award 'Sangeetha Kala Sarathy' from the hands of 46th jeeyar of Ahobila Mutt Sri Ranganatha Yatindra Mahadesikan.
She said in her acceptance speech that the awards make her more humble and more responsible towards the music she inherited from the family.
The Palghat Mani Iyer award instituted by her went to Umayalpuram Sivaraman, but he opted to donate it to Sabha to institute a prize in the name of one of his gurus Sakkottai Rangu Iyengar and said that it be given to the best mridangam player in the evening slots during the December season at the sabha.
Sudha Raghunathan has also instituted an award in the name of her guru, veteran singer M.L. Vasanthakumari and this year, the award went to Amrita Murali., a vocalist and violinist.
The jeer recalled his growing up years at Kumbakonam listening to good music. He appealed to the well wishers especially the patron Nalli Kuppusamy Chetti to facilitate the sabha to have its own venue soon.
The opening ceremonies always go beyond the time stipulated resulting in the inaugural concert delayed and shortened at the end.
It happened at Parthasarathy Sabha too.
The genius' concert of the nonagenarian R.K. Srikantan and the prodigy musician N.Ravikiran on Chitraveena. Accompanying on the mridangam was another veteran Srimushnam Rajarao and on the Kanjira, the young Sri Sundar Kumar. The hall was packed when the concert began.
But Madras rarely choose to be outdoors beyond 8.30 pm on any day. And a huge group walked out after the Bhairavi alapana by the genius duo!
Concerts are on till Jan. 8, 2011 at this Sabha, Interesting lec-dems are also conducted in the mornings.

It's music all over Chennai!
This is the 'season' all the art lovers should make sure that they have no other engagements, except music, in Chennai.
The music spills over to the streets, parks, gardens and drawing rooms of big homes.
Giri Trading company having its business in the heart of Mylapore cannot remain without celebrating a 'Music Festival' of its own.
Their shop sports a new look with a huge banner covering the facade with tiles of pictures of artistes.
The shop offers discounts on various albums - audio and video.
In the evenings, the sides of the stairway to the shop provides space for small performances by the young artistes either as main performers or as accompanists.
There is still a dearth of spaces for performances. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan drew their curtain down on Dec. 10 and Kartik Fine Arts' festival got shifted to Bhavan from Narada Gana Sabha.
Bhavan's Mini hall is now taken up by the Baala Kala Sagaram and Ramjhi's Isai Mazhalai perform in three different slots everyday.

Chennai starts experiencing the flavour of music and dance from early November with a few major sabhas like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Carnatica hosting their events very early.
However, the peak 'season' is on from Dec. 15 for many of the concert hoppers. The office goers prefer to take a break a week before Christmas.
They love to settle down in cozy chairs in mildly air-conditioned halls and enjoy the hot pakodas, bondas and filter coffee in between!
If you are yet to plan your peak season concert schedules, here are two guides / planners to choose your favourite artistes or venues or dates.
The small pocket book of concert reckoner compiled by S. Kannan and supported by Nalli was released on the inauguaral day of Brahma gana Sabha festival on Dec. 4, 2010.

Kutcheribuzz.com publishes an oblong pocket guide listing major concerts in various sabhas in Chennai. This book is available at Kutcheribuzz office at 2nd Floor, Corporation Shopping Complex, 77, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.
Both these books are distributed for free and you really need to be early at the pick up points to be lucky to have them.

Rushed opening ceremony at the Mylapore Fine Arts
A couple of sabhas had their inauguration today. The major ones are The Mylapore Fine Arts Club and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, apart from Mudhra and Sruthilaya.
A main sponsor and arts patron had to be present in more than one venue.
The result is the hurried inaugural evening at The Mylapore Fine Arts Club.
The audience were slowly coming in and warming up inside the auditorium, but by then the awards were given away and the chief guest had left the venue.
But the felicitation by Cleveland Sundaram for the doyen M.S.Gopalakrishnan, who received the Sangeetha Kala Nipuna, brought back the memories of yesteryear concerts by MSG and his accompanists. He expressed awe in how could a 10 seconds' time have a lot of intricate swaras for MSG as though it was an hours' time!
Senior dancer Sudharani Raghupathy felicitated Rhadha, this year's Nrithya Kala Nipuna awardee. She recalled that both the dancers' bio-data used to be the same with the performances and venues they both performed in their prime days.
The highlight of the inaugural ceremony was the prize distribution to the various contests the sabha hosts during the 'season'.
The prestigious Tambura prizes for Thyagaraja krits and Purandaradasa kritis in the seniors category were bagged by two young girls V. Vatsala and Aarti Ananthakrishnan.
Vatsala (seen on the left in the picture) is the disciple of vidwan O.S.Thiagarajan and Aarti's guru is vidushi Seetha Rajan.
The Mylapore Fine Arts Club hosts the music festival till Jan. 2, 2011 and thereafter a dance festival till Jan. 16, 2011.

Listen to the String Quartet
Here is one item performed by the Madras String Quartet at the Chennai Fine Arts festival inauguration.
Sadhana of Kerala's music colleges
It requires an enthusiastic teacher like Prof. M. Balasubramoniam and a minister like M.A.Baby and an institution like the Music Academy, Madras to make possible a 'Sadhana'.
It was indeed a sadhana in many aspects.
Bringing most of the Sangita Kalanidhi awardees on a single stage.
Bringing the scholars to the students to educate and inspire them during the busy 'season'
The programme 'sadhana' is an initiative of the Government of Kerala put together by Prof. Balasubramoniam and his team.
At the inauguration of the four day programme Honourable minister for Education & Cultural Affairs, Kerala state insisted that the students had courage to take up study of their interest rather than timidly accepting the choice of their parents.
By this he hoped to have more people taking up liberal arts, language and more soul satisfying studies.
The minister M.A.Baby's was indeed an inspiring speech.
N. Murali, MD of The Hindu and the president of The Music Academy wished every state had a minister like M.A.Baby.
Violinist Prof. T.N. Krishnan, chairman, Advisory Committee, Govt. Music Colleges, Kerala applauded the works of the Government and the convenor of the programme Sadhana.
Scholar Pappu Venugopala Rao observed that from a visit to the Music Academy archival centre last year, the students got inspired and set up a similar archival centre at Sri Swathi Thirunal College , Trivandrum,
Having the greats of Carnatic music together on stage is another inspiring moment for the students. Each of the Sangita Kalanidhis present on the stage were honoured and the students got received their blessings. The bonus surprise was a photograph of the students with the dozen stalwarts of music to cherish for the lifetime.
During the four days the students will get to listen to senior vidwans like R.K.Srikantan, Prof. T.N. Krishnan and Parassala Ponnammal apart from educative and interactive lec-dems by Chitravina Ravikiran and Prof. T.V. Gopalakrishnan.
The students of Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram, Chembai memorial Govt. Music College and R.L.V.College of music & fine arts, Tripunitura are in Chennai till Dec. 9, 2010,

Honours for V.S.Narasinhan, violinist
Can we call one a neo classical Carnatic violinist?
If yes, V.S.Narasinhan tops this category of musicians. Son of a Gottuvadyam artiste, V.S.Narasinham of the Madras String Quartet received the Gottuvadyam Narayana Iyengar award for Excellence at the inaugural function of Chennai Fine Arts.
Run by Chartered Accountant P.N. Muralidharan and his team, Chennai Fine Arts is not among the sabhas that race to organise concerts in various slots for a span of two weeks during the season.
Guided by his guru Chitravina Narasimhan and musicologist, scholar B.M. Sundaram, Muralidharan dedicates the festival to vaggeyakaras. And the events and concerts at this festival are educative, informative and brings our the rarity of the compositions and composers.
Standing apart from the crowd in its programmes, Chennai Fine Arts also chose an artiste of an innovative genre of music. V.S.Narasimhan, one of the Madras String Quartet formed the group in 1993 and has been on the concert platforms as well cut a few discs.
The four 'stringists' - V.S. Narasimhan, Hemanthraj Muliyil both violinists, B.J. Chandran, viola artiste and V.R. Sekar, cellist share the music and the rhythm among themselves and a present complete concerts with just strings. But Narasimhan prefers to call them as 'four voices'!
At the award function, N.Murali of The Hindu expressed happiness that more and more young people take to music these days, but said it was paradoxical to have fewer young audience still in the concerts.
S.Balasubramaniam, managing director of City Union Bank which is the main sponsor of the Thyagaraja Aradhana at Thiruvaiyaru observed that the concerts in the mofussil attract huge audience. He felt the city was overfed, while the towns like Thanjavur and Kumbakonam where music reigned once are now starved of good music and music teachers.
B.M. Sundaram spoke on the unassuming qualities of the legendary musician Gottuvadyam Narayana Iyengar, his passion for music and his contribution to the world of Carnatic music.
The concert by the Madras String Quartet followed the inauguration.
Though simple, the music was elegant.
There were typical pieces - Sara Sara samaraika sura in Kuntalavarali and Raghuvamsa sudha in Kadana kuthoohalam, but one could also find intricate sangatis in classical ragas like Charukesi and Chakravakam. The performance by the quartet was complimentary to each other and the team spirit stood tall throughout the concert.
