Embar Vijararghavachariar’s Centenary Celeberations started off with Harikatha presentation on each of the four days at the Astika Samajam Venus Colony and here is the review of the Harikatha made by Madurai T N Seshagopalan on the topic titled “Tyagaraja Charitram”
R.Krishnaswamy, of Narada Gana Sabha, in his introductory speech before awarding him the title “Harikatha Ratna”, said how TNS has mastered the core essentials of performing Harikatha successfully, which is no ordinary feat as the exponent must be armed with mastery of music, narration and knowledge supported by good memory and above all eloquence. He quoted the sloka `vasthrena vapushaa vaachaa vidhyayaa vinyena cha,' the five vakaaras needed for success, namely, a person who is well-dressed, has a good personality, is eloquent, knowledgeable and modest and said that all were present in TNS making him a true harikatha vidwan.
Madurai TNS , is a well known vainika gayaka who took the leap in 2003 to make his major professional entry into formal Harikatha along with singing and veena playing.
TNS, did his Harikatha on the topic “Tyagaraja Charitram”, which he presented as a story of Tyagaraja’s musical journey. How the Saint travelled his life through his music towards Lord Rama made the central theme of his charitram.
Important facts about
• his chanting the Ramamantra 96 crore times before the Lord appeared before him
• his singing of Bala Kanaka maya chela, in Atana in sheer ecstacy on seeing the Lord, and how Tyagaraja has employed slow and fast kalapramanas in the krithi keeping with the joy and other moods on seeing Him
• his rendition of Namo Namo Raghavaya in Desiya Todi before his Guru Sonti Venkataramanayya
• his singing Dorakuna itu Vanti Seva in Bilahari before an august gathering of vidwans which made his Guru remark “dorakuna itu vanti sishyudu”
were some of the remarkable features of the Katha.
To demonstrate how the “Ushi” tala is used in Harikatha, he presented the song Kanukontini in Bilahari and sang a few swaras to demonstrate the tala.
Talking about the subject of talent in music, Tyagraja has said that it is the blessing of God and cannot be handed over from father to son as a heirloom. Singing the passage “sangeethajnaanamu dhaatha vraayavaleraa” from Seetaavara in Devagandhari , he said that if one should have sangeethajnana the creator should pre ordain it at birth.
In his krthi Svararagasudha in Sankarabharanam, Tyagaraja says, what is the use of a frog and a stork sitting on the lotus when it cannot enjoy the joy of the honey , unlike a bee which comes from afar to enjoy this infinite joy.
He talked about Tyagaraja’s presentation of Lakshana Lakshya of music through Kadanuvariki in Todi, wherein he explained the meaning of the charanam -niddhuraaniraakarinchi, muddhugaathambooraabhatti and Suddhamaina manasuche, the last one being most important, for producing good music.
An interesting musical perspective was provided by him about Charukesi as a raga for Ada modi galade. In this song, Tyagarja, tells Rama that when He did not speak to the sarvagnaa, nava vyaakarana pandita like Hanuman and let Lakshmana only speak to him, why would He speak to the poor Tyagaraja.
The appropriateness of the raga Charukesi, TNS defined thus : In the aaroha of Charukesi , S,R,G,M,P ascends like Sankharabharnam and the rest of the notes D, N,S are the Hanumathodi swaras.
Since this song is about the Raama Hanuman sambhaashana, he used a raga which incorporates from Shankarabharana and Hanumathodi , as Hanuman is Siva’s amsa.
TNS made Tyagaraja come alive for two hours treating the rasikas with his eloquence, music, wit and expression, packed with information and spiced with wonderful music and quotations.
He has to his credit, made Harikatha presentations on several titles which include
Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar,
Papanasam Sivan,
Sadguru Tyagaraja, Tyagaraja Ramayanam,
Kamba Ramayanam,
Purandara Dasa,
Gurutvam in Ramayanam, Valmiki Ramayanam, Ramayanaamrutham,
Sita Kalyanam, Meenakshi Vaibhavam and Srinivasa Kalyanam.
This year he is slated to perform Nandanar Charitram during the December Season at the Tamizh Isai Sangam on the 1st of January, 2010.

A conversation to archive
Sampradaya, a non-commercial organisation that documents and archives the South Indian music traditions have been around for more than three decades now.
Now, it aims to bring the documentation process open to the public. The interactions with senior musicians are being held in public halls where the rasikas get to listen to the artistes and pose their questions to them about the rich musical traditions they have been practising for long. The entire session is videographed and archived simultaneously.
'Samvada'- an open discussion series began with conversations between Sri. R.K. Srikantan and Sri. N.Ravikiran in August 2009. Following this, another session with mridangam maestro Sri. T.K. Murthy and Sri Palghat T.R. Rajamani was held. The third in the series was between Vina Vidushi Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan and vocalist Smt. Suguna Varadachari.
Early in the season, the recent session of 'Samvada' held on Nov. 27, 2009, featured violin maestro Sri. M.S. Gopalakrishnan in conversation with Sri. Sriram Parasuram.
The septuagenarian violinist who can play both Carnatic and Hindustani styles of music with equal accomplishment opened the session with two hallmark renderings of Parur style, of which the Nalinakanti kriti of Saint Thyagaraja stood out as it did decades ago.
B. Ganapathiraman on the mridangam was seen enjoying his accompaniment on that day. Then the maestro presented a piece in Hindustani style. He said, "You can say it is set in Misra Mand." His daughter, disciple and violinist Dr. Narmada added "This is one of the pieces that is sung like our post tani tukkadas, but in Hindustani." From slow pace to dhruth, it was a perfect Hindustani piece and the tabla player Dilip did add to the hues of the Hindustani style.
Sri Sriram Parasuram had his questions to ask about the Parur style and MSG's additional contributions to the style. He did notice the shift of fingers differently and MSG said that Sri Parur Sundaram Iyer made the shift of the fingers from one string to the other easy by adopting a different fingering method.
He also explained how his father adjusted the violin birudai bowing simultaneously with the other hand to reach the lower octaves, during one of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar's concerts.

He also explained how his father adjusted the violin birudai bowing simultaneously with the other hand to reach the lower octaves, during one of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar's concerts.
The questions from the audience brought out the person in MSG.
To one of the questions, "What would you like to mention about your contemporary violinists like Lalgudi, T.N. Krishnan...?", MSG responded spontaneously. "Nobody can beat Lalgudi in Layam. And T.N.Krishnan's music is 'sowkhyam'. Why should we leave out Kunnakudi - his was a different style. But all are good music!"
"How do you see yourself as a rasika?" was a question, he left to his daughter to reply. Dr. Narmada said, "If in a concert, I did not play up to the standards of the vocalist, he expresses it clearly to me when I am back home. He applauds the vocalist wherever he or she performs well. He even calls up the radio station to appreciate the musician if he finds the performance very good!"
Talking about the practice patterns of Parur Style, he asked Dr. Narmada to demonstrate a few jantai varisais - eight jantais to 16, and 32 in a single bow.
MSG recollected his accompanying the stalwarts Ariyakudi, Chembai, Semmangudi, G.N.B., Madurai Mani Iyer and so on. "I have also accompanied many women vocalists like M.S., M.L.V and D.K.P.," he proudly declared!
To top it all, a question from Sri. Sriram Parasuram, on what MSG would like to convey to the younger generation, emanated. Here goes MSG's prescription - "If one practises what he or she is taught for a minimum of four hours a day (this is in today's busy world; it used to be more in our days) for five years continuously, he or she can become an 'ordinary' violinist to begin with!"
To conclude MSG played a Ghana raga tanam, which bore the distinct stamp of the Parur style and reflected his seven decades of practising the art.
Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha launches its new website
Though there are about 15 major sabhas and 40 other smaller sabhas in Chennai, only a few of them go public internationally through their websites.
The Music Academy has improved the content and management of its website over the last two year.
Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha too has become net savvy. Their website gives information of hall availability apart from details of regular monthly programmes.
Kartik Fine Arts prefers to have it under the banner of Kutcheri Buzz.
The Govt. run Tamil Isai Sangam's website is all in Tamil.
Mudhra, Sri Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj, Naadhabrahmam are others who have been updating their websites reasonably well.
Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha has recently revamped its website and launched it with the schedule of concerts for December Season 2009.
A few hyperlinks are yet to become operational. Still it was good time for the sabha to launch the website with its century old history and details of past events and photos.
Will the other sabhas follow so that the rasikas around the world will get to know what happens where and when, straight from the sabhas' mouths?

Chennai December Season - Sample Issue
Bhavan's Sangeeth Natya Utsav begins
It was a lazy evening on the East Mada Street on Nov.27, 2009. There was place to choose to park your vehicle near Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. A feature unusual to December season near venues of concerts.
Since Andrew Simkin, US Consul General was visiting the inaugural ceremony as Chief Guest, there was tight security at the entrance.
Bhavan's concerts are not ticketed and generally the auditorium gets houseful for concerts of popular artistes and there is a need for a CC TV outside the hall. Similar arrangements were done with the same expectation for the inaugural concert by Nithyasree Mahadevan.
Being a working day and the season yet to catch up to the daily routine of the rasikas, it was a lazy start.
The scene outside the hall at 6.45 p.m is here. Sesahampatti was elaborating Pantuvarali and 'Raghuvara nannu...' in his inimitable style inside the auditorium.
The festival is on till Dec.14, 2009 and admission is free for all concerts.
The complete schedule of concerts is here.

The auditorium is not airconditioned and still has the old asbestos roof and if it rains during the season you will hear the kutcheri of the rain from 'pitter patter' to 'thud thud'.
Yet, this sabha is among the favourites of Mylapore rasikas

Befitting Tribute to the great Embar Vijaraghavachariar on his 100th birth anniversary
.......................by Sivapriya Krishnan
Harikatha and Embar Vijayaraghavachariar are synonymous and an inseparable whole.
The worthy son of Embar Srirangachariar, a celebrated exponent of this unique art form, Vijayaraghavachariar, carried this hoary tradition as a true follower of his father and the art form that he learnt from him.
Born on 24.11.1909 , Embar Vijaraghavachariar, had the rare distinction of being the descendant of the hierarchic lineage of the “Embar” sishya parampara of Sri Ramanuja. Noteworthy here is the fact that, to Sri Ramanuja, Embar was the most “Apta” or the most chosen and close sishya.
The scholarly lineage, grooming from the father and a natural instinct and motivation to study and practice the art form and professionalise in it, are some of the distinctive qualities that Embar Vijayaraghavachariar was endowed with and it was finally rewarded with a public accolade, by The Madras Music Academy, in its 43rd Conference, wherein Embar received the prestigious “Sangita Kalanidhi” title, a rare honour given to any performing musician, recognising him for his lifelong association and achievement in his chosen field of performing arts.
To date, Embar Vijayaraghavachriar’s Harikatha on Tyagaraja, Bhadrachala Ramadas, Nandanar Charitram are remembered for its interesting and lucid approach and quality presentation , by those who have had the fortune of listening to him. For those, who could not see him in person, the AIR did broadcast quite a few and some commercial recordings from private record companies are available.
Embar, from what I have heard from elderly friends, had a captivating stage presence and demeanour. Coupled with his wide learning and vidwat on subjects, handed down carefully by his father- Guru and a good singing ability, helped him to stride great heights in the field of Harikatha. Starting with his maiden performance in 1935, he reigned supreme in this field for over five decades.
His centenary celebrations are being held from today the 24th of November till the 28th of November, 2009 by both Narada Gana Sabha and Shreyas, an institution that propagates Harikatha and managed by Kalyanapuram Sri.U.Ve. R.Aaravamudachariar, who had the fortune of learning the art from the great Vijaraghavachariar himself.
On each of these four days, one topic is to be presented by performing traditionalists of this art form, like Smt. Kamala Murthy ( harikatha exponent), Sangita Kalanidhi Madurai T.N.Seshagopalan (vainika-gayaka-harikatha exponent), Dr.Prameela Gurumurthy ( musician- harikatha exponent) and Sri Janakirama Bhagavathar( harikatha exponent) at the Astika Samaj Venus colony. Each of this artist is to be conferred the title of “Harikatha Ratna”.
The four day series will be concluded on the 28th at Narada Gana Sabha, with special lectures by Sangita Kalanidhi Smt.R.Vedavalli, Smt.Prema Nandakumar, Smt.Nandini Ramani , Smt.Bala Meera Chandra,
Sri.Sriram and a Harikatha by Kalyanapuram Aaravamudachariar on Sri Ranganatha Vaibhavam, all this graced by H.H. Sriman Andavan Sri Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan Swamigal.
Truly a befitting tribute through Katha Vachanam, Katha Sravanam and Katha Smaranam to this great personality who lived this art form with glory and distinction.
